Berkshire’s busy bees!
The vital importance of bees to our countryside was the topic for this year’s annual
‘Historical Luncheon’ for members of the Berkshire Branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE), held at Goring & Streatley Golf Club.
The event included a special honey-tasting exercise and a fascinating lecture on bees and beekeeping by the appropriately named Don Honey.
“One in every three mouthfuls of food we eat depends on pollinators,” Don explained. “A bee’s job is to collect nectar and pollen to survive, and in doing this it pollinates plants. This is essential for the survival of our countryside”, said Don, adding that “bees are the most brilliant and efficient creatures.”
He went on to talk about the role of beekeeping and how honey is extracted from a hive, and explained the differences between honey bees and bumble bees.
CPRE Berkshire aims to protect, promote and enhance the countryside and green spaces of the Royal County, and to celebrate Berkshire’s rural heritage.
