Councillors urged to reject crematorium in Green Belt

20 May 2024
Local countryside campaigners have expressed their opposition to proposals to build a crematorium on Green Belt land at Long Lane, Cookham.

The Berkshire Branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) say that they will be joining Cookham Parish Council, the Cookham Society and Wild Cookham in registering their objections to the scheme. They are urging councillors in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead to reject the planning application when the time comes.

CPRE Berkshire Chairman Greg Wilkinson said: “This scheme would be inappropriate for the Green Belt and would represent an unacceptable encroachment on the rural setting of Cookham. It is not in the Local Plan and there is no justification for it. We call on local councillors to listen to the local community and refuse the planning application from Elegy when it is put before them.”

He added: “The Green Belt is extremely precious to people in this part of Berkshire. In addition to its importance for wildlife conservation, biodiversity and the natural environment, keeping our green spaces open and undeveloped is crucial for the health and wellbeing of the local community, as we all need to reconnect with nature. We should preserve this greenspace for the sake of future generations.”
